Mexico City's iconic Estadio Azteca will host the 2026 World Cup opener between Mexico and South Africa, becoming the first stadium to stage three World Cup opening matches after 1970 and 1986. Renamed 'Mexico City Stadium' for the tournament under FIFA's sponsorship rules, the recently renovated ground holds roughly 87,500 and is the largest in Latin America. It will stage five matches this summer, having reopened after a two-year redevelopment that finished in time for the finals.
