Mexico became the first team to qualify for the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup on June 18, defeating South Korea 1-0 in Guadalajara. A defensive error by South Korea goalkeeper Kim Seung-Gim allowed Luis Romo to tap in the only goal of the match, sparking celebrations across Mexico. The co-hosts sealed their second consecutive win on home soil, becoming only the third time Mexico has won its first two games at a World Cup. Coach Javier Aguirre's side will host their round-of-32 match at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, a fitting reward for topping Group A.
